This spreadsheet was prepared from our tabulations of financial aid data from the 2004 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study. It shows the unmet need, student work/loan burdens and net prices of higher education to dependent and independent students by family income levels and institutional type/control. 10/28/2005

NPSAS Summary by Parental Income Quartiles
UPDATED: Financial Aid Packaging for Full-Time, Full-Year, One Institution Dependent Undergraduate Students In Quartiles 1990, 1993, 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008
This Excel workbook summarizes data tabulated from the 1990, 1993, 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008 National Postsecondary Student Aid Study. Data are reported on averages for family income, expected family contribution, costs of attendance, financial need, grant aid, loan aid, work-study aid, other financial aid, total aid, unmet financial need, student work/study burden, net price to family and net price to family as a percent of family income. Data are tabulated in quartiles of parental income for full-time, full-year, one institution undergraduate students. Data are also tabulated by institutional type and control: public 4-year, public 2-year, private 4-year, private less than 4-year and proprietary. 1/26/2010

Male Shares of Undergraduate Enrollments in Postsecondary Institutions, 1992, 2001 and 2002
This Excel workbook shows the male share of undergraduate enrollments at each postsecondary institution in the state in the fall of 1992, 2001 and 2002.These data were collected from institutions by the National Center for Education Statistics in the annual fall IPEDS enrollment survey.
The male share of enrollments at each institution is compared to the male share of all undergraduate enrollments in the state to produce the Male Equity Index score and rank score for each institution. The Male Equity Index score is converted to a letter grade based on the grading curve shown in the table. 8/30/2006

Participation in Undergraduate Education for Population 25 and Over by State in 1998
This Excel workbook combined data fromthe fall 1998 IPEDS enrollment survey on undergraduate enrollments by age and state, with Census Bureau estimated of each state's population by age in 1998.
The result is undergraduate college participation numbers and rates by gender for each state in the fall of 1998 in the following age groups: 25 to 29, 30 to 34, 35 to 39, 40 to 49 and 50 to 64 years. This project was prepared jointly by the staffs of the Council for Adult and Experiential Learning and OPPORTUNITY. 12/5/2001

Urgent College Attendance by State with Maps; 1992, 1994, 1996
These spreadsheets compare the number of first-time college freshmen who graduated from high school in the previous 12 months by state to the number of first-time college freshmen in that state for three years: 1992, 1994, 1996.
The resulting rationis the Urgent College Attendance Index and this Index is mapped by state. Data were collected and reported by the National Center for Education Statistics. 6/4/2004

ACT National Persistence Rates, 1983 to 2009
This Excel spreadsheet complies all of ACT's published annual reports on institutional freshman-to-sophomore persistence rates.
ACT collects these data on its annual Institutional Data Questionnaire and publishes them in a variety of publications including its annual ACT National Dropout and Graduation Rate Report. Rates are reported as means with standard deviations by institutional control, highest degree offered and admissions selectivity. With ACT's permission, we have compiled these annual reports into this spreadsheet for freshman-to-sophomore persistence rates. 10/14/2009

Death Rates by Suicide Among 15 to 24 Year Olds by Gender 1900 to 2000
This data reports suicides for males and females ages 15 to 24 years old for 1900 through 2000.
The data reported includes both suicide rates (deaths per 100,000 population) for country for 1900 through 2000 and by race/ethnicity for selected years, and the numbers of suicides by gender and by state for 1998, 1999 and 2000. This data was collected and published by the National Center for Health Statistics and its predecessors. 5/27/2003

State Appropriations, Public University Tuition Rates and Need-Based Grant Funding
This large Excel spreadsheet compiles data on year-to-year changes in state tax fund appropriations for higher education, public institution and fee rates, and state funding for need-based grant programs.
Data are compiled for years between FY1975 and FY2007 for all 50 states. These analysis consists of trends and patterns in bivariate correlations over time and within states. 3/31/2008

"I worked my way through college. You should too."
This Excel workbook illustrates the data calculations used to show the number of hours a student would have to work to finance his or her college education through earnings from employment.
The time period shown is 1964-65 through 2007-08. The institutional types for which these calculations are made are public universities, public 4-year colleges, community colleges, private universities, private 4-year colleges and private 2-year colleges. 7/28/2009

National Income and Product Accounts, 1952 to 2008
These two Excel worksheets tabulate the most recently reported data on expenditures for higher education by the federal government, state and local governments, and students and their parents for higher education.
These data are compiled by the Bureau of Economic Analysis as a part of the National Income and Product Accounts of the United States. Compiled and reported in this way, they provide insights into higher education finance for the United States that are not available from other sources. 8/4/2009

State Educational Attainment and Economic Welfare Measures 1989, 1991, 1993 to 2007
This spreadsheet explores the relationships between two measures of educational attainment in states with a variety of economic measures of individual and family welfare in those states.
The educational attainment measures for each state are: 1) the proportion of people 25 and over with at least a high school diploma, and 2) the proportion of the population age 25 and over with at least a bachelor's degree from college. These data are available for most years between 1989 and 2007. The correlations with high school graduation are highest with the employed/population ratio, poverty rate and median household income. The correlations with college graduation are highest with per capita personal income and median household income. 12/1/2007

State, Local and Federal Fiscal Support for Higher Education
per $1000 of State Personal Income, FY1961 to FY2010 
This large Excel spreadsheet combines the Grapevine data from Illinois State University on state tax fund appropriations for higher education, with state personal income data published by the Bureau of Economic Analysis.Data are reported for each state for each fiscal year from 1961 through 2010. These data illustrate the ebb and flow of state investment in higher education over the last three decades.  2/25/2010

Pell Grant Shares of Undergraduate Enrollments in Leading Universities and 4-Year Colleges
This Excel workbook contains worksheets with data on Pell Grant recipients and undergraduate enrollments for leading universities and colleges for 1992, 1993, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004.
These leading institutions are grouped as: state flagship universities, US News top 50 national universities, US News top 50 national liberal arts colleges, Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU's), land grant colleges and universities, and Hispanic Serving Institutions (HISs). 12/4/2007

Public High School Graduation Rates by State, 1981 to 2008
This Excel workbook compiles historical data by state on the cohort survival rates of public school ninth graders through regular high school graduation.
These data are reported by states to the National Center for Education Statistics, and from these reports the cohort survival rates are calculated for each state and each state is ranked by the resulting high school graduation rate. 5/11/2010

Higher Education's Share of Gross State Product by State, FY1977 to FY2007
This Excel workbook summarizes by state available current fund expenditures data for public, private and proprietary higher education institutions from FY1977 through FY2007.
These sector data are also expressed as a share of Gross State Product in each state, and these shares are ranked against all other states.  Current funds expenditure data for private institutions was redefined in FY1997 and thus is not strictly comparable to prior years' data.  5/11/2010

College Entrance & Participation Rates by Race/Ethnicity & Gender for Recent High School Graduates & Leavers, 1959 to 2009
This Excel workbook summarizes data published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics from the Current Population Survey 
on the transition from high school directly into college the following fall for men, women, whites, blacks, hispanics and other race population categories.These data are the first published each year on numbers of high school graduates and college freshmen. 5/11/2010

Chance for College by Age 19 by State, 1986 to 2008
This Excel workbook contains the data used to calculate the proportion of each state's 19 years olds who will be enrolled in college somewhere in the United States in the fall following high school graduation.
Data are available for the years 1986, 1988, 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008. The public high school graduation rate, the college continuation rate, and their combination - chance for college by age 19 - are shown for each state and year. 9/2/2010
